- Why did you pick your sport?
Junior Club Captain at Thames Scullers Rowing Club, Gwen Llewellyn says: My brother did rowing at school so I used to go and watch him at regattas. When I was 12 he encouraged me to give it a try and I went on a learn-to-row course with Thames Scullers. I really love rowing especially when I’m out on the water - it’s really fun. If you’re on your own you feel like you can get away from the rest of the world. When you’re in a crew with others it can be great energy, especially when everyone gets in time which makes the feeling of the boat moving through the water really amazing. It is such a great team sport, and I find this more so than other sports.
- What motivates you to get better?
I really like to be able to see an improvement in my performance in races and land training. I want to be able to achieve similar things to my brother so that pushes me on to do better.
Thames Scullers is a really supportive club and all the children involved are very supportive. This also motivates me to keep trying and to do the club proud.
- Biggest success so far
I’ve been able to take part in Welsh Rowing camps over the last few years. It makes me feel very proud to be part of this.
My biggest racing success was coming third in the Ball Cup at Dorney in a double.
I was also really proud to be appointed as club captain at Thames Scullers and through that how I have been able to support the juniors at the club.
- Sporting Hero?
Frankie Allen. She went to my school and it’s been great to watch her rowing career and her Olympic successes.
- Best sporting event you have watched on TV or live
Watching the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic heats and finals last year was so exciting, particularly knowing some of the athletes taking part.
I really love going to Henley Royal Regatta each year. We’ve been on all different days and watching the qualifiers is just as interesting and energising as being there on finals day.
