Wimbledon 2026: Upsets, Fairytales and Familiar Faces

How Wimbledon 2026 brought a breath of fresh air to Tennis...

As always, Wimbledon delivers a spectacle like no other. The women’s bracket gave us a new champion for the 9th tournament running, while a familiar face strode comfortably to yet another men’s Wimbledon title.

Let’s have a round-up of yet another fantastic year of Wimbledon.

Wimbledon Championship Final… Czech!

Familiar names emerged for this year’s Women’s bracket - Sabalenka, Rybakina, Swiatek, yet it was the Czech Republic who emerged victorious over all. Karolina Muchova was no stranger to the big moment, reaching the semi-final of every major, and the final of Roland Garros in 2023 after defeating Sabalenka in a three hour long matchup in the semi-final.

Her opponent on the other hand, Linda Noskova, had never progressed further than the quarter final of a major tournament. This inexperience however did not seem to show to begin with. The 21 year old Czech took a 6-2 / 5-3 lead, where it seemed all but impossible for Muchova to make any form of a comeback.

What came next was nothing short of a miracle. After saving five Championship points, Muchova went on to win the second set 7-5 in an almost impossible scenario, mirroring her fightback against Sabalenka in 2023. With Noskova fighting back tears during the break between the second and final set, it all seemed over for her to make any sort of recovery. But with the story so far in this Championship, there was sure to always be one more storyline to be written.

With one of the most extraordinary showcases of strength and mentality, the young superstar recovered from her blushes, and took the final set 6-3 to claim her first ever major Championship. A sight to behold, particularly after losing out on five chances to win prior to this. It was by far one of the most exciting Wimbledon finals of the decade, to which hopefully there will be more in the future.

The Story of the Favourites

Iga Swiatek: The defending champion unfortunately fell to the curse in the women’s bracket at Wimbledon, and became the ninth woman in a row to be unable to defend her title. After losing in the third round to Alexandra Eala 7-6 / 6-2, it was a day to forget on Centre Court for the no. 3 seed, to which now she will hope to add to her collection at the US Open.

Aryna Sabalenka: Wimbledon woes continue for the World no. 1, yet it wasn’t semi-final struggles this time, but her old adversary Naomi Osaka in the Round of 16. And for the major tournament in a row, she once again uttered her wish to quit and run away from the sport, to which there is no doubt of her appearance at the US Open later in the season. It seems for now that her talents are best kept on hardcourt, and nothing else.

Elena Rybakina: The 2022 Champion found herself unable to make it past the third round for the second year running, showing a decline in her form since her impressive Australian Open win earlier in the year. Only time will tell if she can return to glory, but for now her record in the past year and a half has not been as impressive as it most likely should be. The World no. 2 will need to show true grit if she is to keep her place in the top 5.

Zverev vs Sinner Ends in Familiar Fashion

Alexander Zverev has had an extremely impressive 2026 tennis season, winning the Roland Garros Championship, and making it to the final of Wimbledon, a tournament he has famously never made it past the fourth round of. And after winning his first set against Sinner in 9 meetings, it seemed that the victory in June had given him a new lease of life.

However, the Italian proved once again why he is the best player on the planet at the moment, with a dominant 7-6/ 6-3/ 6-4 last 3 sets to become the tenth male player to go back to back at Wimbledon championships.

It is important to mention that through all of this, Carlos Alcaraz has still been absent with his wrist injury, making it clear that for now - the stand-out players are Sinner and Zverev. It will be interesting to see if a new ‘big three’ emerges, or if it will return to Sinner and Alcaraz dominance. Zverev will be hoping for the latter to not be true, so for now all he can do is carry on executing his best performances before the Spaniard comes back from injury.

Furthermore, the longer Alcaraz stays gone from the men’s game, the more interesting the rankings become, as if Zverev is to overtake Carlos in the rankings, it will set up Sinner and Alcaraz to be on the same side of the bracket for future tournaments to come, leading to Zverev getting more and more chances for victory.

With the end of this tournament, we have seen new faces emerge victorious in Noskova and we have seen a season of tennis where the finals are no longer Sinner versus Alcaraz. It has been a breath of fresh air indeed this year, and hopefully more surprises and upsets are in store for the future.
