More European Glory? Or will the Americans Soar to another Home Triumph?

Updated: Sep 29

ree

The 2023 Ryder Cup saw the Europeans reclaim the famous trophy once more, continuing their 30-year streak of winning on home soil. They come into this year’s edition having not won across the pond since that famous weekend in 2012 at Medinah and will be hoping to find some of that magic when they arrive in Farmingdale this week. Looking for inspiration from the likes of Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose, both of whom were at Medinah, there is a strong chance for success this year. But who’s to say they even make it past the strength of this American team? Scottie Scheffler will be looking to continue his dominant year and guide his teammates to yet another American triumph. Let’s see who will be the standout players at the 2025 Ryder Cup.

The European Team - Ones To Watch:

Rory McIlroy*

There’s not much that needs to be said about this man. He lives and breathes the Ryder Cup, striking immense fear into any opponent he’s faced with. Unlike his usual falters in high-pressure situations, he tends to thrive on the high-octane feeling that is this tournament. However, McIlroy’s team play at the last US-held Ryder Cup saw him lose three matches, but his strength always comes in his singles play. He also comes off of an impressive solo performance in 2023, gaining 4 out of a possible 5 points of his own. Watch out for more Rory Magic this weekend.

(Tipped to make 2.5 points or more at 4/6)

Tommy Fleetwood*

After making his debut at the Ryder Cup in 2018, Tommy has been a staple part of the European team, leading them to victory in the last edition. He comes off the back of a long overdue tour win, seeking to yet again prove his worth in Farmingdale. Fleetwood will always grab a fair amount of points, amassing three out of a possible 4 in 2023. He also showed strong grit during Europe’s failure in 2021, only losing one match out of three and halving the other two. He’ll be one to keep a keen eye on this weekend.

(Tipped to make 2.5 points or more 9/10)

Tyrrell Hatton

Hatton has an outstanding resume at the three Ryder Cups he’s attended, only losing four matches out of the eleven he’s played. In 2021, he had the third most points, only behind Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, both of whom carried most of the points that year. In 2023, he didn’t lose a single one of his Ryder Cup matches, gaining 3.5 points out of a possible 4. He has proven time and time again that he can perform on the biggest stage and will most likely do so again. Be sure to watch another stand-out performance from him.

(Tipped to make 2 point or more 4/6)

Ludvig Aberg

In 2023, Ludvig Aberg came into the tournament a rookie, ready to prove to the world he was ready to take on the pressure of the Ryder Cup, and after winning his first match, there didn’t seem to be any pressure on him in the first place. He went on to take down Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka with his teammate, Victor Hovland, forever cementing his place in the history books. He has yet to show his skill in a US Ryder Cup, but make no mistake, Ludvig will rise to the occasion.

(Tipped to make 2 points at 8/13- worth looking at)

John Rahm

John Rahm never seems to falter when it comes to this tournament. Over the last 2 editions, he’s posted over 3 points in each, establishing himself as one of the key reasons to European success. When the Spaniard gets going, there aren’t many players equipped enough to stop him. By proving himself in America four years ago, he has shown that he can play under the pressures of the USA crowd and will undoubtedly do so again. Keep eyes on yet another Rahm masterclass.

(Tipped to make 2 points or more at 8/11)

The American Team - Ones To Watch:

Scottie Scheffler*

World No. 1, 2025 PGA and Open Championship winner – Is there anything else to say about the season Scottie Scheffler has had? He's spent over 150 weeks at the No. 1 spot, not achieved since Tiger Woods himself. His rookie performance at the 2021 Ryder Cup saw him unbeaten, gaining two and a half points out of a possible 3. Even though he struggled immensely in 2023, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that he will dominate whoever he faces this weekend. Just like Francesco Molinari in 2018 and Dustin Johnson in 2021, expect him to win all of his matches come the last day.

(Tipped to make 3 points or more at 4/6)

Patrick Cantlay*

Cantlay has always been a strong force at the Ryder Cup, only losing two of his eight matches for America. When called upon, his attacking style is perfect for a tournament like this and will go on to help his teammates try and win. In 2023, he was one of the standout players amongst his losing squad, never seeming to slow down while the Americans wilted away. He’s a player that seems to thrive under pressure and will no doubt prove this again.

(Tipped to make 2.5 points or more at 5/4)

Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson missed out on the 2023 Ryder Cup, many believing it was mainly due to his involvement in LIV Golf in 2022. Yet, he makes a triumphant return to the team and will be looking to prove himself as he did in 2021. Without losing a single match, he was a force to be reckoned with at Whistling Straits. His powerful drives will be key in taking on the Farmingdale course, and he will definitely be one to look out for when the tournament starts. He will no doubt be looking for the green on the par 4s on offer.

(Tipped to make 2.5 points or more at 4/5)

Justin Thomas

The veteran amongst the American pack, Justin Thomas, will hope to continue his impressive Ryder Cup form in Farmingdale. The American has played at the last 3 editions, only losing four of his matches out of the thirteen he’s featured in. There aren’t many players that can take down Thomas when he gets going at tournaments, and it won’t be any easier this time. Be sure to back Thomas to gain a decent amount of points this year.

(Tipped to make 2 points or more at 5/6)

Xander Schauffele

Schauffele always seems to find himself at the top of the leaderboards when it comes to tournaments and has shown why he is worth having on the US Ryder Cup squad. He has a 50% win record, with three out of four of these wins coming on home soil. Xander will be hoping that his already proven performances in the US will come again by the weekend. Look out for him in his singles play, as he always turns on an attack with which his opponents struggle to keep up.

(Tipped to make 2.5 points or more at 11/10, 2 points or less at 8/11)

So who will win the Ryder Cup?

It's hard to say whether the Americans or the Europeans will come out on top this time. The bookies' favourites will always be the home team; however, it would be wrong to underestimate this European side. At the practices this week, they’ve been putting on the charm with the American crowd, hoping to settle them down before Friday. It will be hard to take down Scheffler, Cantlay and DeChambeau, but expect one of the best Ryder Cups in recent years.
