Liverpool's Quest for the Quadruple

Could this be history in the making?.. As Liverpool strive to become the first team ever to win the quadruple (Champions League, FA Cup, Premier League and Carabao Cup), the neck and neck battle between them and arch-rivals Manchester City, continues to build pressure and excitement around the tournaments. An incredibly exciting time to be a Liverpool fan, or perhaps become one!

Having sat at the top of the table earlier in the week, Liverpool is currently just one point behind Man City, who crept back in front after Wednesday’s win against Brighton. This nail-biting rivalry, reminiscent of the teams 2018-19 season, has everyone wondering, who will win the Premier League Cup title? Having been fourteen points ahead in January, it would appear to be Manchester City’s to lose but Guardiola has stated the team ‘knows what they have to do’ (which is a relief)… But I’m sure Liverpool do too – the question is who can handle their nerve in the countdown, who will lose their nerve first…..

For newly appointed players such as Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, who only transferred at the beginning of the year, it’s been quite the start to his season. He has adapted quickly and proven his worth after scoring two goals in the Premier League so far. Sadio Mane’s recent performance is certainly noteworthy too – a longstanding player for Liverpool, who has scored five goals in the last five matches, with Klopp stating “ The quality of Sadio we don’t really have to talk about because it’s absolutely incredible.” With his contract set to expire in 2023, you’d expect an extension would be on the cards.

Whilst previous attempts have proven just how challenging winning the quadruple is, if there was a team worthy of such a title, surely Liverpool’s performance this season would be justified? The Reds have lost just three games across all competitions this season, and already have the Carabao Cup in hand, after a tense 11-10 win in the penalty shootout. If Liverpool win the Champions League semi-final against Villareal, they could come face to face with Man City yet again. Whilst in the FA Cup, Liverpool are now through to the final against Chelsea and could end a long wait having not won the trophy since 2006.

As the Premier League scoreboard currently stands, Liverpool have the most goals (83) and have only conceded 22, highlighting the strength of Klopp’s team. Of the top five scorers in the Premier League, three of these belong to Liverpool – Salah, Jota and Mane. With the odds of Liverpool winning the quadruple now stacked at 7/1, here’s to wishing we’d placed a bet earlier in the season.
